A silver Jeep Liberty was involved in a high speed chase just after 9:14 PM Nov 13, 2014. The chase ended in a wreck at the stoplight on Mount Vernon Avenue and the East Highway 178 on-ramp.
The suspect, 22-year-old Ramiro James Villegas, was shot by three BPD officers and tased by another. Villegas died overnight at a nearby hospital. No firearms were recovered at the scene, and two witnesses were filmed by KERO 23 news stating:
"Hit the pole, got out the car and just threw his hands out and they got out the car and they shot him"-Aaron Caldera
"When he got out, he approached the cops with his hands up and the cops shot him"- Patricia Caldera
The Bakersfield Police Department however, claims that they ordered Villegas, who was yelling obscenities, to stop approaching them, and he ignored orders. Then Villegas reached for his waist at that point the officers opened fire. The 4 involved officers received the usual punishment, paid administrative leave.
